Spyro
Spyro the Dragon
'Looks like I got some things to do!'
(English) Voiced by:Carlos Alazraqui (Spyro the Dragon), Tom Kenny (Ripto's Rage, Year of The Dragon, Enter the Dragonfly, Reignited Trilogy), Jess Harnell (A Hero's Tail)
(Latin American Spanish) Voiced by:Luis Daniel Ramírez (Reignited Trilogy)
The Purple One himself, a young dragon living in the Dragon Kingdom. Spyro happened to be too small for Gnasty Gnorc to trap in crystal, so he set about rescuing the other dragons from this fate and resolved to torch Gnasty. Following this, Spyro embarked on similar exploits in Avalar and the Forgotten Realms. Spyro is generally stubborn and laidback, though he is perseverant in regards to whatever goal he has.
- Adorkable: Has some shades of this in the Reignited Trilogy, notably during some of the rescue animations and several of the credits' artwork. For instance, in one picture, he's sculpting with Nils of Town Square. Nils is making a picture of Zoe, while Spyro's making one of himself and putting Cool Shades on it.
- All Up to You: In spite only being a young dragon, Spyro time and time again saves the world from whatever evil befalls it. That said, each game of the original trilogy gives a valid reason why:
- In the first game, Gnasty's spell missed Spyro, meaning he was literally the only dragon up for the job of freeing the rest. However, several dragons at the end level were implied to be heading to defeat Gnasty after they were freed, only to end up frozen again.
- In the second, the Professor's portal picked up the first dragon that went through it, with that dragon being, well, Spyro. Ripto blowing up the gate justifies why no other dragons could be brought over to help, leaving Spyro the only dragon for the job.
- In the third game, Spyro (and Hunter) are the only ones small enough to go through the tunnels. While Spyro does make several allies afterward, he still leads the charge against the Sorceress.
- There's no real reasons for the other games in the series, but it can be assumed that by that point Spyro had become the go-to-dragon in the saving the world business.
- American Kirby Is Hardcore: The Japanese artwork uses a cuter design for the character. Note that the game was released in America first.
- The Baby of the Bunch: Prior to Year of the Dragon introducing the newest clutch of hatchlings, Spyro was one of the few juvenile dragons in the Dragon Realms. Other dragons around his age were alluded to in online promotional material for the first game (which also claimed that Sparx was a little older than him), and the similarly-aged Ember and Flame debuted in A Hero's Tail, but members of his clutch were never seen otherwise. Amongst the playable characters from the second game onward, Blink is the closest to Spyro and Sparx's ages while the others are definitely adults.
- Bad Butt: Is this in Spyro the Dragon. He grows out of it in Ripto's Rage!.
- Badass Adorable: He's a cute purple dragon who's saved the world from threats that older, more experienced dragons couldn't.
- Badass in Distress: In A Hero's Tail, he gets captured once, leaving Hunter to rescue him.
- Bag of Spilling: Averted. All abilities he purchases from Moneybags in Ripto's Rage! are retained in Year of the Dragon (with the exception of the permanent superflame).
- Big Brother Instinct: To the dragon eggs in Year of the Dragon. Just ask Moneybags.
- Blood Knight: He's eager to get into scraps in Spyro the Dragon.
- Bond One-Liner: Upon defeating Gnasty Gnorc with his flame breath in the first game: 'You're toast, Gnorc! Heh-heh!'
- Breath Weapon: He is a dragon. He most often breathes fire in short streams, though certain powerups can alter what comes out. This includes super-powerful fireballs, iceballs, Cold Flames, lightning, and bubbles. The last of which is used to catch lost baby dragonflies in Enter the Dragonfly.
- Busman's Holiday: Ripto's Rage! starts with Spyro and Sparx going on a vacation.. but first the Professor summons them to Avalar to get rid of Ripto.
- Celibate Hero:
- Due to his age as a young dragon, he's aware of love, but has no real desire for it (yet, at least). He's aware of Hunter and Bianca's relationship in Year of the Dragon, as well as Ember's crush on him in A Hero's Tail, and is uninterested in both, though he's presumably not against Hunter being happy. He also fails to notice Elora puckering up for a kiss in the epilogue of Ripto's Rage!
Spyro: (seeing Hunter and Bianca kiss) It's a sad sight, Sparx. Another noble warrior falls victim to the plague of love.- In The Reignited Trilogy, Elora gets Spyro to watch the fireworks as in the original Year of the Dragon game. This time however, both end up sitting next to each other, and it wasn't just Elora who moved closer - he may not yet realize it, but it seems even Spyro is starting to feel attraction.
- Characterization Marches On: In the first game, Spyro seemed rather disinterested in actually saving the dragons and just wanted to kick Gnasty's behind. He's even rather disrespectful to several of them and has a rather snarky tone when talking to them. Later games would have him actually care for those he saves and be more of a hero to help others rather than for the fun of it. Spyro Reignited Trilogy would further this, altering the tone of his dialogue slightly in regards to the dragons in the first game to have him sound more playful or concerned rather than snarky. The credits of the trilogy even show several pieces of art of Spyro getting along with the elder dragons just fine and possibly looking up to a few of them.
- Circling Birdies: Used to distinguish hits that damage him.
- Cool Shades: He wears these during the 100% ending of Spyro the Dragon, and a cheat code in the Reignited Trilogy allows him to wear them throughout all three games.
- Deadpan Snarker: Has a bit of a mouth on him, mostly in regards to enemies or hard-to-rescue dragons.
- Double Agent: Helps both sides of the Land Blubber-Breeze Builder conflict in Ripto's Rage!, including helping Pvt. Romeo elope with Juliet in Zephyr.
- Elemental Powers: As the series progresses, he's able to breathe ice, lightning, water, and bubbles.
- Evil Laugh: After defeating Gnasty Gnorc in Spyro the Dragon.
- Fire, Ice, Lightning: Is able to channel all three though his breath in Enter The Dragonfly and A Hero's Tail.
- Flight: He's usually restricted to just gliding. Only under certain circumstances such as in a Speedway or with a powerup can he fly freely.
- Four-Fingered Hands: He gains thumbs in Reignited Trilogy.
- Girly Run: His walk cycle in A Hero's Tail looks a lot like prancing.
- Guest Fighter: He's a 'Guest Racer' in Crash Team Racing: Nitro-Fueled. He brings with him his own track, Spyro Circuit, and his own kart, the Spyromobile.
- Heroic Mime: In Spyro: Shadow Legacy, in stark contrast to the majority of his appearances.
- Has a Type: Downplayed. In the original series, it is implied that Elora has a crush on him, something that he may or may not reciprocate. In the Reignited Trilogy, this crush is much more noticeable with both, and the various fauns from Fracture Hills are much nicer around him. It seems that fauns make up a significant portion of his fan-club.
- Heterosexual Life-Partners:
- With Sparx. They're practically inseparable.
- After a brief period of butting heads in the second game, his friendship with Hunter has evolved into this, with the two going on several adventures together.
- Hidden Depths: Although he's rather boastful and snarky and can come off as rather disinterested in learning things that don't involve kicking the current Big Bad's behind, the credits of Spyro Reignited Trilogy show that, being an Artisan, he's still rather decent at various arts, apparently skilled enough in acting to put on a play with a fellow Artisan and able to make a rather on point sculpture of himself out of marble.
- Homing Projectile: Can use these in Scorch's Pit and Speedways in Year of the Dragon.
- Horn Attack: Charging with his horns is a primary attack of his. In Ripto's Rage! he learns the Headbash, a horn-based variant of Ground Pound.
- I Just Want to Be Badass: In Spyro the Dragon, he admits to Ajax in High Caves that he wishes he were as strong as him, enough to defeat the large armored spiders prowling the level.
- Implausible Boarding Skills: In Year of the Dragon. This is downplayed, as Spyro has four legs to grip his board and wings to help with jumps, though Hunter still thinks it's odd Spyro got good so quickly.
- Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Befitting his nature as a Mascot with Attitude, he's snarky, impatient and a tad bratty, but he's still ultimately a hero who cares about doing the right thing. The 'jerk' part is even more downplayed in the Reignited Trilogy, to the point where he's a borderline Nice Guy.
- Kid Hero: He seems to be twelve in Year of the Dragon, though it's unknown how dragons age, so he might be older than he looks. Even then he doesn't seem any older than his mid-teens.
- Leaning on the Fourth Wall: Makes a lot of comments of this nature in Spyro the Dragon.
- Mascot with Attitude: Befitting a platform game from the 90s. Spyro Reignited Trilogydownplays this, however, altering the tone of his dialogue, adding more body language and making his interactions with the elder dragons less snarky to play up his kinder/kiddish aspects. Especially with the credits pictures involving him and the Artisans.
- More Dakka: Rapid-fires missiles from his mouth while battling Scorch in Year of the Dragon.
- Nigh-Invulnerability: Can acquire this powerup from certain gates, often to traverse toxic sludge.
- Nitro Boost: Supercharge paths and powerups allow him to charge at high speeds, demolishing anything in his path. He also uses this in skateboard races in Year of the Dragon.
- One-Hit-Point Wonder: Without Sparx, any damaging attack from an enemy will do him in.
- Playing with Fire: Of course.
- Power Glows: Invincibility and breath-related powerups have this effect on him.
- Pre-Mortem One-Liner: 'Happy holidays, fat boy!' before melting a snowman in an ad for Ripto's Rage!.
- Purple Is Powerful: His skin is purple, and he's saved several worlds almost entirely on his own.
- Ship Tease: With Elora, though he doesn't act on it because he dislikes romance. He avoids Ember for the same reason.
- Spring Jump: Through certain powerups.
- Stuff Blowing Up: Fireballs created by his superflame end in small explosions.
- Super Drowning Skills: In Spyro the Dragon, he drowns in any sort of water.
- Super Not-Drowning Skills:
- Can swim underwater infinitely beginning in Ripto's Rage!, only drowning in pools of sludge.
- Crashing into bodies of water in speedways does not cause him to drown, but it does make him instantly lose the challenge. He slaps the water in frustration whenever this happens.
- Super Spit: Can spit certain rocks over considerable distances.
- The Unchosen One: Unlike his other iterations who tend to be The Chosen One in one way or another, this Spyro doesn't really have a special destiny or anything inherently remarkable about him, but this does little to hinder him from saving entire realms from evil. Of course, this is also extremely vague, as several dragon elders refer to him as 'the one' in the first game, much to Spyro's own confusion. This fact was never referred to again in the classic series, though.
- Took a Level in Jerkass: In A Hero's Tail, he's far more arrogant and actually denies help to those who won't reward him at a couple points throughout the game.
- Took a Level in Kindness: He's generally less cocky in Ripto's Rage! and Year of the Dragon than he was in the first game. The Reignited Trilogy rolls with this, tweaking several of his interactions in the first game to come off as less arrogant and much nicer.
- Vague Age: He seems like a kid at first with how he acts, yet Spyro Reignited Trilogy heavily Ship Teases him with Elora, who in turn appears to be in her late teens, like it's no big deal. Supplementary material for the first game claimed he was a teenager, which was likely abandoned long before Year of the Dragon began production and altered the lore on dragon births as such. By the time A Hero's Tail rolls around, several years have passed since his first scuffle with Gnasty.
- Worthy Opponent: He considers Gnasty Gnorc this after first defeating him.
- Would Hit a Girl: Will torch any baddie regardless of gender.

Sparx
Sparx the Dragonfly
'You purple putz!'
Spyro's best friend. He monitors Spyro's health and helps him collect treasure. In Year of the Dragon this extends to dragon eggs, by way of certain missions in which he is playable. Install logitech wireless keyboard k400r.
- A Day in the Limelight: Has a few levels to himself in Year of the Dragon.
- Breath Weapon: Gains the ability to spew energy balls in Year Of The Dragon.
- Fairy Companion: Follows Spyro whenever present. This extends to other playable characters.
- Floating in a Bubble: How he is able to travel underwater.
- Force Field: Eating a grey butterfly will grant Sparx one that allows him to ram enemies and hazards with impunity.
- Heterosexual Life-Partners: With Spyro. They've been best friends since the first game.
- Hyperactive Metabolism: He'll recover health the moment he swallows a butterfly.
- Informed Species: Promotional art for the original PlayStation games shows him with arms and bulbous antennae. He more closely resembles a real dragonfly in Reignited Trilogy.
- Life Meter: As he loses hit points, his color cycles through gold, blue, and green before he totally vanishes. In Reignited Trilogy, his tail droops as well. He can acquire an additional point of health in Year of the Dragon (a brighter gold at full health) and A Hero's Tail (red on his last point).
- Macross Missile Massacre: Eating a purple butterfly will allow Sparx to spit spreads of rockets that have a slight homing ability.
- More Dakka: Eating a green butterfly substantially increases Sparx's rate of fire, though it causes shots to go in a whipping pattern and has limited ammo.
- Platforming Pocket Pal: He's perfectly capable of following Spyro and friends around without any trouble by flying behind them.
- Playing with Fire: Eating a red butterfly will grant Sparx a flaming spread shot whose shots will spread into further shots when they hit enemies.
- Power-Up Magnet: His duty is to pick up gems and extra lives for Spyro. In Ripto's Rage! onward, the extra lives manifest as special butterflies.
- The Quiet One: He doesn't talk at all in the first two games even when addressed, and still doesn't talk much in the third.
- Suddenly Voiced: Zigzagged in Year Of the Dragon where Sparx spoke, but only in a 'buzzy' language. Later played straight, he starts speaking legibly in A Hero's Tail.
- Took a Level in Badass: Becomes playable in Year of the Dragon, helping acquire dragon eggs where Spyro is too large to travel.
- The Unintelligible: Before A Hero's Tail he only speaks in kazoo-like noises, though his cadence matches the on-screen text.
- Use Your Head: In Year of the Dragon, he has a miniature version of Spyro's charge attack. A certain upgrade allows him to destroy certain chests for Spyro in this manner.
Hunter
Hunter the Cheetah
'I uhh.. Got a little lost.'
Voiced by:Gregg Berger (Ripto's Rage!, Year of the Dragon, Enter the Dragonfly), Jess Harnell (A Hero's Tail), Robbie Daymond (Reignited Trilogy)
Spyro's close friend and sidekick. How to get a boiler license in wisconsin dells. He meets Spyro in Avalar and later follows him to the Dragon Kingdom, helping him look for orbs and dragon eggs by way of various missions. He's an established athlete and archer, often lending his bow to Spyro's cause.
- Accessory-Wearing Cartoon Animal: Starting from A Hero's Tail, he actively keeps his bow and arrows strapped to his back. This carried over into the Reignited Trilogy, where he wears them in both Ripto's Rage! and Year of the Dragon.
- Ascended Extra: In his first appearance, he exists merely to offer missions and accidentally start the whole Ripto takeover in the first place. He's playable in certain Speedway missions in Year of the Dragon, but has entire playable segments to himself in A Hero's Tail.
- Badass Normal: Hunter excels in physical ability and can work well with vehicles and machinery. He's also quite skilled in archery, which he's used to help Spyro on several occasions.
- Big Brother Mentor: Occasionally takes this role for Spyro, running the gliding tutorial missions in Ripto's Rage! and Year of the Dragon. In Ripto's Rage! he tells Spyro about camera settings, and in Year of the Dragon introduces him to skateboarding.
- Breakout Character: Initially just one of the many mission givers in Ripto's Rage (albeit with some plot relevance in accidentally starting Ripto's takeover), Hunter eventually became one of Spyro's most prominent allies, becoming playable in certain Speedway missions in Year of the Dragon and fully playable in certain areas in A Hero's Tail (along with appearing in every other Spyro game in-between), ultimately culminating in him being the only character besides Spyro and Sparx to make the jump to The Legend of Spyro series.
- Butt-Monkey: Getting his feet locked in solid rock, thrown into a wall, stuck in a hole, battered with attacks aimed at Spyro, kidnapped and imprisoned..
- Cast Herd: With Elora and the Professor in Ripto's Rage!, then Spyro and Zoe in Year of the Dragon.
- Cats Hate Water: Pops up once or twice in Year of the Dragon, which is bizarre as he has no problem wearing scuba gear.
- Cool Board: Teaches Spyro to ride a skateboard in Year of the Dragon, and competes with him in certain missions.
- Cool Plane: A mission in Ripto's Rage! involves Spyro riding his remote-controlled drone, which is equipped with guns.
- Cool Pet: A manta ray, though Spyro had to tame it for him. Hunter teaches it to carry weaponry in Year of the Dragon.
- Cowardly Lion: Claims to have the ability to get things done and for the most part does. He's just not very bold or outgoing about it when it's time to shut up.
- Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: When he does fight, he's actually pretty good at it, usually employing his bow but also using anything from laser pistols to a fighter plane or sometimes just going toe to toe. Reignited gives his martial prowess more time to shine.
- Dating Catwoman: With Bianca prior to her Heel–Face Turn.
- Depending on the Writer: How tough he is. At his weakest in Ripto's Rage where he is a total wimp who can barely talk back to Ripto, and at his strongest in A Hero's Tale where he is a main playable character who can actually back up his boasting.
- The Ditz: A mild example. While competent, he does have a few moments of stupidity.
- Eaten Alive: Apparently by a metal shark in the epilogue of Ripto's Rage!. He returns alive and well in Year of the Dragon.
- Flanderization:
- Zigzagged in A Hero's Tail: his ditzy Surfer Dude tendencies are far less pronounced, but his ego seems to have increased (granted in this case, he's able to back it up a fair bit).
- His Archer Archetype skills, despite being an iconic part of his character at this point, were a case of this. When he debuted in Spyro 2, he used his bow a grand total of once in the entire game. Later games would play up this more and more to the point his The Legend of Spyro incarnation was near full-on Robin Hood. Even the Spyro Reignited Trilogy would retroactively play this up, showing him carrying around a bow on him even when he doesn't need it. Considering this ended up becoming a rather iconic part of his character, this may be a case of Tropes Are Not Bad.
- Funny Animal: He's an anthropomorphic cheetah.
- Guest Fighter: He's a 'Guest Racer' in Crash Team Racing: Nitro-Fueled.
- Heterosexual Life-Partners: He and Spyro seem to become this by Year of the Dragon.
- Iconic Sequel Character: He debuted in Ripto's Rage! and has become Spyro's most iconic recurring ally. He even managed to return (albeit in a different form) for the subsequent reboot.
- Informed Species: Downplayed in the original PlayStation games: he does look like a cheetah, but not too closely. In A Hero's Tail, his muzzle is white, his tail is more catlike, his spots are darker, and he now has discernible teeth and digits. His design in Reignited Trilogy takes cues from this incarnation but makes him scruffier and gives him stripes on the sides of his muzzle like a real cheetah.
- Jet Pack: Uses it to stop cat burglars in Ripto's Rage! and invading farm animals in Year Of The Dragon.
- Lovable Coward: Sometimes he's like this. In the second game, when Ripto steals the power crystal from the Professor, Elora tells him to do something to stop him. His reply?
- Nice Job Breaking It, Hero!: Accidentally let Ripto, Crush, and Gulp into Avalar in the first place by punching the wrong coordinates into the Professor's superportal.
- Official Couple: With Bianca.
- Plucky Comic Relief: Hunter's clumsiness and dialogue makes him the source of most humor since Ripto's Rage!.
- Promoted to Playable: Has limited playability in Year of the Dragon and is fully playable in A Hero's Tail.
- The Rival: Albeit a good-natured one, as he quickly comes to respect Spyro's capabilities during Ripto's Rage!.
- Small Name, Big Ego: A nuanced example: he's fairly competent, but is still a ditz who views himself as The Ace in sports.
- Super Drowning Skills: Averted in the original series since he has no problem giving Spyro missions to do while underwater and can swim fine on his own, but Played Straight in A Hero's Tail where he sinks like a rock in any body of water.
- Took a Level in Badass: From a bumbling sports fan in Ripto's Rage!, to a tinkerer and adept pilot in Year of the Dragon, to a competent warrior in A Hero's Tail.
- Took a Level in Jerkass: A downplayed case in A Hero's Tail: he's still a nice guy overall, but a lot more egotistical and a tad blunt and rude in dialogue scenes.
- Unexplained Recovery: Falls into the lava during the final battle of Ripto's Rage!, emerging without a singe on his fur in the following cutscene. He's also eaten by a metal shark in the epilogue, but returns in Year of the Dragon.
- Weapon of Choice: Projectile weapons, specifically a bow and arrows.
- Vocal Evolution: Gregg Berger's take became less gruff after Ripto's Rage!, gaining a more relaxed 'surfer dude' dialect. This is further enforced by Jess Harnell in A Hero's Tail and Robbie Daymond in Reignited Trilogy.

Sheila
Sheila the Kangaroo
'You dragons used to rule this entire world, you know. Then all of a sudden you left.'
Voiced by: Edita Brychta (Year of the Dragon), Chantelle Barry (Reignited Trilogy)
'They say this world used to have magic coming out the wazoo.. flying ships, singing forests, wishing stones, you name it.'
One of the four other playable characters besides Spyro in Year of the Dragon, and the first to be freed. Sheila, an Austrialian-accented kangaroo, lives on a mountain with her three goat neighbors. The Sorceress captures her and has her guarded by Moneybags, from whom Spyro has to free her.
- Action Girl: A very competent fighter.
- Badass Adorable: A kangaroo that can kick open a turret, for crying out loud.
- Bash Brothers: Helps Spyro fight Buzz.
- Beware the Nice Ones: Usually a friendly and pleasant lass, though she won't hesistate to trample Moneybags or any rhynoc.
- Double Jump: She can jump once in midair.
- Half-Dressed Cartoon Animal: She dons a safari shirt in Reignited Trilogy.
- Hartman Hips: Technically speaking she had these from the start, but her more anthropomorphic design in Reignited Trilogy really draws attention to her huge legs.
- Girliness Upgrade: Reignited Trilogy gives her a more curvaceous body and red hair styled in pigtails.
- Ground Pound: One of her forms of attack.
- In a Single Bound: Comes with the territory of being a kangaroo. She can Double Jump and has a super jump activated by jumping upon hitting the ground from a previous jump.
- Kangaroos Represent Australia: While she lives on a European-based mountain with German-accented mountain goats wearing lederhosen, she has a thick Aussie accent.
- Kick Chick: Her entire moveset revolves around powerful kicks and stomps.
- Leitmotif: Sheila's Alp.
- Ms. Exposition: Explains part of the situation regarding the Forgotten Realms' lack of magic and their history with dragons after Spyro frees her.
- My Fist Forgives You: After Spyro frees her from Moneybags, she assures the bear 'no hard feelings'.. before buck kicking him hard into a nearby wall.
- Nice Girl: A kind, friendly kangaroo who's perfectly happy to lend a foot to anyone who needs her help. Just don't try to keep her in a cage, as Moneybags learned the hard way.
- Spring Jump: Can perform a very high jump by jumping again immediately upon landing.
- Team Mom: Seems to take this role toward her mountain goat neighbors, as well as a group of seals in Seashell Shore.
- Tertiary Sexual Characteristics: Gains pigtails and a more feminine silhouette in Reignited Trilogy.
- The Smurfette Principle: The only playable female character in Year of the Dragon.
Sgt. James Byrd
'Sgt. Byrd; 90068. Awaiting orders, sir.'
Voiced by:Tom Kenny (Year of the Dragon, Reignited Trilogy), Michael J. Gough (A Hero's Tail)
One of the four other playable characters besides Spyro in Year of the Dragon. Sgt. Byrd, a penguin, lives with hummingbirds who raised him, taught him to fly, and trained him as a soldier. The Sorceress captures him and has him guarded by Moneybags, from whom Spyro has to free him.
Spyro 3 Year Of The Dragon Ita Pc Richard Petty
- Abnormal Ammo: Drops weapons for Spyro to use during his battle with Spike, who can use them for himself.
- Authority Equals Asskicking: He is an army sergeant, after all.
- Badass Adorable: He's a flying penguin.. with missile launchers.
- Best Served Cold: Saves his rockets for Moneybags upon Spyro freeing him.
- Big Damn Heroes: His hummingbird troops are unable to effectively combat the rhynocs in his absence, but he quickly turns the tide upon his return.
- Death from Above: He can pick up things with his legs and then drop them down to an enemy below.
- Everything's Better with Penguins: Flying penguins with missiles and bombs.
- Flight: He can fly indefinitely, though compared to Spyro using a superfly powerup he is less mobile.
- Flying Flightless Bird: Because of the training he got from hummingbirds, he is able to flap his penguin flippers fast enough to be able to fly.
- Gameplay and Story Segregation: Zigzagged. Sgt. Bird says he has limited ammunition when Spyro frees him, saving it for Moneybags instead of simply blasting himself out of the cage. It quickly turns out James can fire rockets indefinitely during gameplay.. however, blasting similar cages with his normal ammunition proves to do nothing, so trying to free himself was fruitless (and dangerous).
- Glass Cannon: He can kill most enemies at range, but he's hard to steer when walking. Like Spyro, he dies in one hit without Sparx.
- Interspecies Romance: His girlfriend, Isabelle, is one of the fairies from Charmed Ridge.
- Jet Pack: Gets one in A Hero's Tail.
- Leitmotif: Sgt. Byrd's Base.
- Macross Missile Massacre: His shoulder-mounted rocket launchers are his primary weapon.
- Officer and a Gentleman: He enjoys hanging out at the Tiki Lodge and is in a relationship with a Charmed Ridge fairy.
- Shout-Out: His name is 'Byrd, James Byrd', as his introductory cutscene is titled. He has the same British accent and his call number is 9-double-0-68.
- The Stoic: Speaks and acts like a typical military officer.
- There Is No Kill Like Overkill: While it is E-rated Bloodless Carnage, the fact James relies heavily on explosives makes him the most destructive of Spyro's allies.
Bentley the Yeti
'Please do afford me the sublime honor of enjoying your visitation in the nearest future!'
Spyro 3 Year Of The Dragon Ita Pc Richards
Voiced by: Neil Ross (Year of the Dragon), Fred Tatasciore (A Hero's Tail), Dave B. Mitchell (Reignited Trilogy)
One of the four other playable characters besides Spyro in Year of the Dragon. Bentley, a large yeti, lives with his younger brother Bartholomew at an outpost in some icy mountains. Bentley wields a large club made of ice and enormous strength, having the intelligence and vocabulary to back it up. The Sorceress captures him and has him guarded by Moneybags, from whom Spyro has to free him.
- Attack Reflector: By spinning his club quickly, he can deflect enemy projectiles back to their senders.
- Beware the Nice Ones: Normally a nice guy, but if you mess with his little brother or imprison him he will bring the thunder.
- Big Brother Instinct: To Bartholomew, whom he seems to be responsible for raising as well.
- Bigfoot, Sasquatch and Yeti: He is identified as a yeti and lives in a cold climate, but has no problem visiting other realms. He even has a favored walking spot in sunny Bamboo Terrace.
- Boxing Episode: Gets into a boxing match with the Colossus yeti after Bartholomew tells him the yeti took his ball.
- Carry a Big Stick: His Weapon of Choice.
- Collector of the Strange: He collects rocks.
- Dumb Muscle: In his later appearances, where he's not nearly as smart as he was in his debut, but he's just as strong as before.
- Foolish Sibling, Responsible Sibling: The responsible to Bartholomew's foolish.
- Genius Bruiser: He was highly intelligent and highly powerful in his early appearances.
- Gentle Giant: He is one of Spyro's bigger allies and can fight well, though he is hardly ever hostile toward anyone non-villainous.
- Guttural Growler: In the Reignited Trilogy, Bentley's speech has been updated to have him speak with a slight growl, while also retaining his Sesquipedalian Loquaciousness.
- Leitmotif: Bentley's Outpost.
- Mighty Glacier: He's very slow and can't jump very high, but he's the only character who can break armored doors and chests without powerups.
- No-Holds-Barred Beatdown: Gives Moneybags quite the thrashing upon being freed by Spyro.
- One-Man Army: It took two dozen rhynocs to take him down and imprison him.
- Rant-Inducing Slight: Compared to the others, he seems almost willing to ignore Moneybags after being freed, but when the latter demands some gratitude for freeing him, he loses it and tears into him both verbally and physically.
- Same Character, but Different: In A Hero's Tail, he is noticeably redesigned and lacks his accent and advanced diction, being a more standard not too bright Gentle Giant.
